Even though we were Zionists, in Avukah we were against the Jewish state and for binationalism. In retrospect it was politically impossible. Hannah Arendt was writing long articles against the Jewish state and Commentary was publishing some of them.

I was connected to David Riesman who was connected to Erich Fromm who knew Albert Einstein and there was a coming together of a group of people from different backgrounds and very different perspectives (Riesman had an assimilationist position whereas Fromm and Einstein had a universalist position), all of whom were skeptical, who felt that the establishment of the Jewish state simply as a Jewish state would be a problem.

After Israel became a state, I became fully committed—that the Jewish state must survive. I saw it as being surrounded by danger.
